Food wrapping film — the clear cling film used to seal meat trays — is one of those consumables that doesn't get attention until you run out. The wrong film causes seal failures, wasted product, and unhappy customers. The right film just works, day after day. Our 450mm × 1500m, 12-micron food wrapping film is the standard professional spec for butcher counter use. Here's why each part of that spec matters.

Why 450mm width

450mm is the standard width for UK butcher counter tray sealing. It comfortably wraps a standard meat tray (typically 250-380mm long) with enough overhang to seal underneath properly. Compatible with the Simplicity 45 tray overwrapper (450mm sealing length) and equivalent benchtop sealers.

Wider film (600mm, 700mm) exists for larger displays or specialist applications but creates more waste on standard trays. Narrower film (300mm, 380mm) struggles to wrap larger items. 450mm is the right default for the work.

Why 1500m length

The roll length determines how often you change rolls during a trading day. At 1500m per roll, a typical butcher counter goes through one roll every 1-2 weeks depending on volume — enough to be efficient without taking too much storage space.

Shorter rolls (500m, 1000m) cost less per roll but more per metre, and create more changeover downtime. Longer rolls (2000m+) are heavier and more awkward to handle on benchtop sealers. 1500m is the practical sweet spot.

Why 12 microns (12mu)

Film thickness is measured in microns (μm), abbreviated as "mu." 12 microns is the standard professional spec for tray sealing, and it's a balance between three properties:

  • Cling strength: Thicker film clings to itself better, holding the seal under handling.
  • Stretch and conformability: Thinner film stretches and conforms to the tray contour better, producing tighter seals.
  • Cost: Thinner film costs less; thicker film costs more.

At 12 microns, you get cling and conformability without paying for unnecessary thickness:

  • 8-10 microns: too thin for commercial tray sealing; tears under tension, fails to hold seal
  • 12 microns: standard for butcher counter and deli use
  • 14-16 microns: heavier, used for thicker products or harsher handling; more cost
  • 18-22 microns: specialist applications (cooked meat, ready meals)

Food-grade certification

The film is manufactured to food-grade specification, meaning it's:

  • Safe for direct food contact
  • Compliant with UK and EU food contact materials regulations
  • Free from added phthalates and other prohibited migration chemicals
  • Approved for refrigerated storage of fresh meat and other foods

Generic "cling film" from non-food-grade sources may look identical but isn't certified for food contact — a contamination risk that fails any hygiene audit.

What it does well

  • Tight, hygienic seal on meat trays — prevents juices escaping, maintains presentation
  • Visual transparency — customers see exactly what they're buying
  • Tamper-evident — once sealed, can't be opened and resealed without showing
  • Refrigeration compatibility — stays sealed in display fridges at 1-4°C
  • Moisture barrier — reduces drying out of exposed meat during display
  • Air barrier — slows oxidation and bacterial growth on the meat surface

What it doesn't do

Honesty about limitations:

  • Not a long-term preservation solution. Tray-sealed meat is for same-day or next-day sale, not week-long storage. For longer storage, use vacuum packing.
  • Not a freezer film. 12-micron PVC isn't designed for sub-zero storage — it can crack or split when frozen.
  • Not a substitute for hygiene. Film seals what's already in the tray; it doesn't make contaminated meat safe.
  • Not microwave-safe. PVC can release chemicals when heated; transfer food to a microwave-safe container before reheating.

Using with a tray overwrapper

The 450mm width is matched to the 450mm sealing length of the Simplicity 45 and equivalent benchtop overwrappers. Standard procedure:

  1. Place the filled tray on the overwrapper plate
  2. Pull a sheet of film over the top, tucking the edges underneath
  3. Push the tray onto the heated sealing bar (the film melts at the contact line, sealing the underneath)
  4. Lift and inspect — the film should be tight, with no loose edges

Storage

  • Store cool and dry (15-25°C ideal)
  • Avoid direct sunlight — UV can degrade PVC over months
  • Keep in original packaging until use
  • Shelf life: typically 2 years from manufacture for unopened rolls

Hand application vs machine

The same 450mm × 1500m film works for both:

  • With a tray overwrapper (Simplicity 45 or similar): fastest, tightest seal, most professional finish
  • Hand application: slower, less consistent, but works for low-volume operations or where you don't have a sealer yet

For any operation doing 20+ trays a day, an overwrapper pays for itself in labour savings within months.

Verdict

Standard professional spec at sensible commercial pricing. 450mm × 1500m × 12 microns is the right answer for typical butcher counter and deli use, with no compromise on seal quality or food-safety compliance. Order in multiples to keep at least one spare roll in stock; running out mid-day is an avoidable disaster.
