Prem-I-Air 40W Fly Zapper: Advanced Insect Control for a Pest-Free Environment

Prem-I-Air 40W Fly Zapper - Heavy Duty Commercial Electric Fly Killer for Butcher Shop

Flying insects in a butcher shop aren't just unpleasant — they're a hygiene rating risk and a compliance issue. The Prem-I-Air 40W Fly Zapper is a commercial-grade insect control unit designed for shops, food prep areas, and warehouses where chemical sprays aren't an option. Here's where it fits and what the specs actually mean for your premises.

At a glance

  • Coverage area: 150 sq metres
  • UV tube: 20W UV-A (EH1357A)
  • Total power consumption: 43W
  • Grid voltage: 2200V
  • Operating current: 0.19A
  • Voltage: 230V (standard UK mains)
  • Dimensions: 330mm × 662mm × 90mm
  • Protection class: I
  • Type: T18
  • Finish: Black/silver

How it works

The unit attracts flying insects using UV-A light at a wavelength specifically tuned to be visible to flies, mosquitoes, and most flying pests. Insects fly toward the light source and contact the electrified grid, which delivers a 2200V charge that kills them instantly. Bodies fall into the catch tray at the base, which you empty during normal cleaning rounds.

No chemicals, no sprays, no residue — just UV light and electricity.

Coverage and placement

At 150 square metres effective coverage, the 40W unit handles a typical butcher shop, small abattoir, or food prep area. For larger premises, mount two units to cover the space rather than relying on one to do more than it's rated for.

Placement matters:

  • Mount 2–2.5 metres off the floor
  • Position between potential entry points (doors, vents) and the food prep area
  • Avoid placing directly above food preparation surfaces — debris falls
  • Keep away from competing light sources that would dilute the UV draw

Power and operating costs

At 43W continuous draw, running cost is approximately £30–40 per year if left on 24/7 (at current UK electricity rates). Most shops cycle it down outside trading hours, which roughly halves that.

Maintenance

The UV tubes lose effectiveness over time even though they still appear to light up. Replace the tubes every 12 months to maintain attractant performance. Clean the catch tray weekly during summer, monthly the rest of the year.

Verdict

Solid commercial-grade unit at a sensible price for the coverage. The 150 sq m rating is realistic — it's not an oversold spec — and the standard 230V mains plug means no installation cost. Good fit for any butcher shop, deli, or food prep area where chemical control isn't appropriate.
