Versatile Precision: M&S Digital Scale for Weight and Price Calculations

M&S Digital Butcher Scale - Commercial Digital Bench Weighing Scale

A reliable digital scale is the unglamorous backbone of any butcher shop. Weighing inaccuracy by even 10 grams across a busy day compounds into either lost margin or unhappy customers — neither of which a working butcher can afford. The M&S Digital Scale is our own-brand commercial counter scale, built for the daily volume of an independent butcher shop. Here's where it fits.

At a glance

  • Maximum capacity: 40 kg
  • Function: Weight + price calculation (per kg, per lb)
  • Dimensions: 354mm W × 127mm H × 378mm D
  • Weight: 2.5 kg
  • Tare function: Yes (zero out trays/containers)
  • Unit conversion: kg / lb / oz / g
  • Overweight protection: Yes
  • Auto-off: Battery-conserving idle timeout

What "weight + price calculation" actually does

A standard digital scale just shows weight. A weight-and-price scale lets you enter a price per kilo (or per pound) once, and as you place items on the platform it shows you both the weight and the price in real time. For counter service, this means the customer can see exactly what they're being charged before you ring it through the till — which both speeds service and reduces disputes.

Set up takes a few seconds per product; once configured, the scale becomes the front line of price transparency at the counter.

Who it's for

The 40kg max capacity is sized for typical butcher counter use — large joints, full birds, sides of bacon, primal cuts. Strong fit for:

  • Independent butcher shops weighing cuts to order
  • Delis and farm shops selling by weight
  • Fishmongers and game dealers
  • Market stalls (the 2.5kg weight makes it portable between locations)
  • Any retail food business pricing by weight

For larger volume work (whole sides, hanging weights), see our scales collection for the heavier-duty options.

Tare function — use it

The tare button zeros the scale to whatever's currently on it. Practical use: put an empty tray or container on the scale, press tare, and now the scale reads zero — add your product and you see only the product's weight, not the tray plus product. Essential for counter use where customers receive product in trays or bags.

Overweight protection

If you accidentally place more than 40 kg on the platform, the overweight protection kicks in to prevent damage to the load cell (the bit inside that actually measures weight). Cheap scales without this feature are routinely destroyed by one careless overload.

Calibration and accuracy

Counter scales used for trade purposes need to be approved and verified for trade use under UK weights and measures regulations. Check the verification status before using a scale for retail sales — Trading Standards officers do check, and an unverified scale used commercially is a fixable offence but can affect your hygiene rating audits.

Care and lifespan

  • Wipe the platform clean after each use — never spray directly with cleaning products
  • Keep dry — moisture damages load cells over time
  • Replace batteries when prompted; don't run on near-flat batteries (accuracy suffers)
  • Service or recalibrate annually

Verdict

Practical, accurate counter scale at a sensible price point. The 40kg capacity covers all standard butcher counter work; the weight-and-price function speeds service; and the standard form factor fits any counter setup. Strong default choice for an independent butcher's main counter.
